Summary
One-week window, Friday 10/23 evening to Friday 10/30, dominated by Google GDC contract pressure, the Rocky Linux Pro rename, the Stratum launch, and the Core42 deployment stalling on the customer network. Twenty-three decisions logged; one auto-logged, the rest reviewed one at a time. Google: an ask for a full kernel with IBT off was reclassified as staffed kernel work rather than kmod signing, refused unless it fit, and resolved with Tissa as the minimal kernel with IBT disabled for Monday; the contract redline narrowed scope to air-gapped, priced the FIPS module or struck it, and anchored the 14-day SLA to upstream patch identification; a larger follow-on ask is handled by writing down what CIQ believes, playing it back, and quoting an ETA as if funded, aimed at roughly 300K more without slowing the base contract. Rocky Linux Pro: the rename and the 8.10/9.2 convergence ship together, customers are contacted before anything breaks, and structural RLC names stay until there is a value or a problem. Also: no gatekeeping of company data unless a signed compliance rule requires it; Tim Pepper pushed for a paid RESF board role; the 2027 engineering budget carries only two unallocated heads; every engineering team takes every product training; desktop agent work starts from the user experience with the API as an acceptable path; CVE automation is framed as zero-human with cost assumed away first; an existing open support req becomes Arabic-speaking Middle East support; confidence numbers are reinforced as machine-read interfaces. Coverage: fourteen Fathom meetings were rate-limited in the gather and all were recovered by hand; Drive was used for corroboration only.
Wins
Stratum launched on 10/29 with CNCF certification for Kubernetes 1.35 through 1.37 merged the night before. The RESF board approved the Rocky Linux Pro name unanimously. Google dropped the full-kernel requirement within a day once the ask was reframed, keeping the contract on its signature path and opening a possible 300K expansion. Production Koji signed its first kernel module build. ISO 42001 certification is complete.
Challenges
Core42 GB300 delivery stalled on network access CIQ does not control, with Core42 reworking its plan roughly two months out. Google asks shifted three times in a week (full kernel, versions 1.16 versus 1.17.1, then a new Anthropic-driven ask). The kernel team is underwater on CVE volume, with kernel releases alone taking more than one engineer. Chronic TPS slippage persists on LTS 10.2 GA, the Errata API and FIPS hardware.
Learnings
Peter changes how a request is classified rather than arguing its size: an ask that leaves the agreed shortcut becomes staffed, priced work. He anchors commitments to events CIQ controls, such as patch availability, instead of disputing the number. He keeps internal identifiers decoupled from public brand and changes customer-facing structure only when a real problem or value appears. He removes cost from the first feasibility pass so ambitious designs are not killed early by stale cost guesses.
What I Learned About Your Decision-Making
When a customer ask leaves the agreed shortcut, Peter names it as a different category of work and routes the commercial conversation to himself, keeping engineers out of scope negotiation.
Team Status
View TPS ReportToday is a heavy deadline day with little change from yesterday: eleven items are due Oct 30, and the ones that look shaky are 10.2 FIPS submission to atsec (still Blocked), RLC Pro H 10.2 compliance deliverables (73%), and the two PRODUCT-1068 release-file items in RAT (50-52%), so expect slips announced today rather than deliveries. Core42 GB300 deployment is due tomorrow and still sits at 50% after the 40-point confidence drop on Oct 27, which makes today's Core42 calls the real status check. New since yesterday: ISO 42001 shows as completed, Fuzzball SaaS appears as a new PIC/Engineering Ops priority targeting Nov 27, and RESF Mirror Manager was re-dated from Oct 26 to Nov 18 three days after it was due, with confidence raised to 90%. The chronic overdue items have not moved: Errata API for Veeam is 14 days late in acceptance testing, RLC Pro LTS 10.2 GA is 9 days late, Koji production is 3 days late, and the Fuzzball AMD and Warewulf Pro RLC image items are 42 and 35 days late. Worth raising with Justin today: LTS 10.2 GA and the Errata API both sit in his org and both have stopped moving.
Tomorrow's Focus
Derived, not stated by Peter: confirm the Monday minimal kernel delivery and the written ETA table to Tissa; raise the RESF board seat for Tim Pepper with Greg and Bjorn; watch Core42 network unblock and the secure Warewulf design doc.
Decisions Made
GDC full kernel with IBT off is not just sign the kmod - say no unless it fits, do not reopen the contract, Peter and Kelly own the Tissa conversation
strategy · high
Rocky Linux Pro rename - one disruption, customers told first, structural RLC names stay until there is a value or a problem
technical · high
GDC new ask after landing Anthropic - write down what we believe, parrot it back, give an ETA assuming funded, and use it to win the added 300K without slowing the base contract
strategy · high
GDC contract redline - air-gapped scope only, FIPS module is priced (75K plus lab fee) or dropped, 14-day critical/high SLA with the clock starting when a patch is identified upstream
strategy · medium
Sensitive Decision
Sensitive Decision
No data gatekeeping - access to company data by default unless a signed compliance or legal rule requires a block; tool owners can request features but cannot stop work
operational · medium
Sensitive Decision
Tim Pepper - push now for an RESF board or leadership role, paid not volunteer, with Peter carrying it to Greg and Bjorn
strategy · medium
2027 engineering budget - current reqs plus only two unallocated heads, one org-wide gathering every six months, cloud spend modeled as growth-tied
strategy · medium
Sensitive Decision
Every engineering team takes every product training, due in 30 days - manager carve-outs overridden
operational · low
Desktop agent - define the user experience first; the per-token API is an acceptable starting path and model-integration choices stay open
technical · medium
Sensitive Decision
CVE automation framing - the goal is zero humans, assume tokens are free to test feasibility, and redesign the flow rather than swap human boxes for automation boxes
technical · medium
Use an existing open support req for an Arabic-speaking Middle East support hire - a new role, not a like-for-like backfill
people · low
Title mapping rules for Justin org - no senior or junior variants, map to the lower bound and promote later, no comp or promotions in the exercise, no zealotry where someone gets hurt
operational · low
The RESF operations lead joins department heads so the RESF can ask CIQ for help without knowing who will provide it
operational · low
Core42 10/29 - CIQ is not the bottleneck; the only CIQ task is a best-practice doc for Warewulf in secure environments, routed to Michael Shinn
operational · low
Grenoble pitch - Peter quarterbacks the technical answers and capabilities due within 6-8 weeks are presented as in final test
operational · low
ISMS council - accept Risk 33 (vendor breach) and accept a binding legal-review obligation for externally shared incident reports
operational · low
Advertise the Kubernetes req on launch Thursday - no extra week of waiting
operational · low
Reinforce: confidence numbers are machine-read interfaces between teams and must be right in real time
operational · medium
