Summary
Window Thursday 10/1 morning to Friday 10/2 afternoon. Eight decisions logged: five reviewed one at a time, three picked from a compact batch of weaker candidates. The largest: every internal tool CIQ depends on comes under Wallace as IT - he owns the map, hosting, DR and access, builders keep maintaining, and unused tools get an evaluation date and are shut down. Two calls on the same principle: Karl browser tool runs on CIQ infrastructure (licensing fine, a third-party dependency not), and Nathan next manager can come from outside if nobody internal fits, but must have managed before. Desktop V1 now has a December to first-week-of-January window against a minimum-requirements list, latest-only as the working assumption, with an accepted black eye. Smaller: no more junior engineering hires, the Spark benchmark claim approved as correct and defensible, a Core42 Kubernetes demo for Alex, and Jira reporting automated toward visibility. Four 10/2 meetings had no Fathom recording (Eric Sheridan, AI on Fuzzball, Eric Pardee, Nathan 1:1).
Wins
Core42 deployment prep is documented and repeatable - a recipe for doing it again and again. Stratum enablement landed well with sales engineering, and Peter frames it as pure upside on next year plan. The Spark benchmarks would place first on four leaderboard tests on stock RLC Pro AI 9. The internal-tools question was raised by Wallace himself.
Challenges
Nathan is overloaded at 16 reports heading to 20 with no manager headroom. Spark Arena submission is blocked on account approval. Core42 building access dates look unreliable, with on-site likely slipping past Oct 15. Fuzzball dates continue to slip without confidence updates.
Learnings
Peter separates oversight from labor: Wallace can own every internal tool without doing the work on any of them. Ownership and control outrank price for anything CIQ sits on. He limits how many stretches a person takes on at once. A date follows once the gating artifact he named actually exists.
What I Learned About Your Decision-Making
Peter splits accountability from labor - an owner can hold the map, standards and kill decision for things other teams keep maintaining. On infrastructure, cost is not the criterion; continuity and control are - he would pay 100x for something CIQ runs itself. He treats usage as the survival test for internal tools and wants a dispassionate owner watching it, so killing things becomes routine rather than political. He sequences stretches: he will invest his own time in someone learning a new altitude but will not pair that with them also developing a first-time manager. When he gates a commitment on an artifact, he gives the date as soon as the artifact lands. He signs off on public claims for accuracy and leaves wording to the owner even when he dislikes it.
Team Status
View TPS ReportLittle moved overnight: the one new completion is Cadence's migration onto Jenkins for CVE remediation (Core Distro, landed 10/1, a day past its 9/30 target), and no items are ready for release. Fuzzball is the soft spot. v4.4 image-definition-in-workflow is now 7 days overdue at 50% confidence, the Arcee Homebrew CLI item is Blocked and 7 days overdue at 20%, AMD evaluation support and multinode NVLink/NCCL are each 14 days overdue, and Warewulf Pro RLC Pro node images is 7 days late at 50%. Several dates slipped without a matching confidence update and are worth a question: the Errata API for Veeam moved 21 days to Oct 16, RLC Pro H 10.2 compliance deliverables moved 14 days to Oct 30 at 53%, and ISO 42001 moved 40 days to Oct 31 while still showing 100%. Next week is crowded: RLC Pro LTS 10.2 GA, the CLK 6.18 kernel, Kernel CVE wk39 and SBOM for rlc-bootc are all due Oct 9, and the Koji dev environment and DGX Spark are due Oct 7. Core42 (575-node GB300, Abu Dhabi) is still at 75% for Oct 31, though Chris now expects the on-site dates to slip past Oct 15.
Tomorrow's Focus
Derived, not stated by Peter: send Wallace the internal-tools proposal; approve the security req; line up the Core42 Kubernetes demo before Wolford lands Monday; confirm one of Nathan open reqs is scoped as an experienced manager; find the Revenium recording for Bjorn and Ramesh.
Decisions Made
Internal tools come under Wallace IT umbrella - he owns the map, hosting, DR and access, builders keep maintaining, and unused tools get an evaluation date and are shut down
operational · high
Nathan next manager can be hired from outside if no internal candidate fits - and must have managed before, so Nathan never trains a first-time manager while learning to manage managers
people · high
Karl browser tool must run on CIQ infrastructure - licensing it from him is fine, depending on a third-party service is not
technical · medium
Desktop V1 - a minimum-requirements section from Product, a December to first-week-of-January window, latest-only as the working assumption, and an accepted black eye
strategy · high
Approve the Spark benchmark claim in the RLC Pro AI press release - correct and defensible beats preferred wording
operational · low
Stop hiring junior engineers - hire domain experts with decades of experience and pair them with AI
people · high
Get Core42 a Kubernetes demo from the head of the Kubernetes team - in person in Abu Dhabi if his schedule allows
strategy · medium
Jira confidence and date updates - the goal is org visibility, not leads pushing buttons; automate the manual part
