Refuse the Veeam rollback and the never-again promise - fix forward and hold the response until the RCA is understood
Situation
Veeam escalated for the third time after a CIQ portal output change broke their CVE scraping script. Melissa Kivisto asked for a rollback and, failing that, a call from Peter explaining a path forward that ensures this absolutely will not happen again. Peter rejected both halves in #department-heads: there is no world where we promise that something will not happen in the future, rolling back is not the right solution at all, we help them move forward and doing so is not complicated. A day later a second breaking change took down their rsync; Peter told the channel there is an RCA in progress and he wants the team to fully understand what happened before responding to the customer.
Reasoning
A never-again guarantee is outside CIQ control, so giving it converts a recoverable incident into a standing liability that the next release can breach. Rolling back is the same mistake in operational form - it buys quiet now by promising a stasis engineering cannot hold. The forward path was already delivered (the API shipped the previous night), so the customer-facing cost of fixing forward is small and the cost of the promise is permanent. On the second incident he applied the same logic to timing: responding before the RCA lands risks a second statement that has to be walked back, which is what actually damages the relationship.
Additional Context
Third break of the same Veeam script. Justin Haynes identified the breaking change and owns the RCA; Bjorn deferred to Peter and Justin. Peter separately told Ryan Smith he understands the second failure but not why the first one bit when it did, and flagged that as still concerning.
Observed Evidence
Melissa: Ideally that response would be that we have rolled back the changes. If we are absolutely certain that we cannot do that, then I think a call with Peter explaining our path forward that ensures this absolutely will not happen again should be offered. Peter, eight minutes later: There is no world where we promise that something will not happen in the future.
