Greg research team - no management role for someone who will not take a defined role; a research function exists only with Greg running it
Situation
Greg proposed bringing someone in to lead a research team. Peter objected on two counts: the person note said they did not want a very defined role, and Peter has a hard time putting someone like that in any management position; and while he favors a research team under Greg, he does not favor CIQ funding a research function in general - its value is as an arm that brings Greg projects to the point of evaluation, and CIQ is small enough not to need that function without Greg running it. Greg later reframed the ask as a hands-on principal-engineer-level person who takes his direction.
Reasoning
A management seat requires accepting accountability for a defined scope; wanting an undefined role disqualifies someone for that seat. Research is justified by what it feeds, not by existing; at CIQ size a research function without Greg is overhead with no customer. Saying yes to the team under Greg keeps his leverage while setting criteria for the seat.
Additional Context
Confirmed by Peter as stated.
