Clear Wolfgang for the UAE, cut the on-site window to week one, and hand the final pick to Wolford

Situation

Following the 9/16 decision to put a technical body on the ground in the UAE, Peter closed out the open questions in three moves across two days. He talked to Wolfgang, who wants to go. He asked Adam Jackson directly whether a German national can be sent and got a yes the same morning. He told Bjorn in the C-Suite Sync that he does not think the engineer needs to be there for the entire deployment - just the first week or so, when we are going to need to push a button. Then, when Chris Wolford raised Randy as an alternative, Peter said he is fine with it being Randy, that he does not mind, that it is 100 percent Wolford call, and attached the only real constraint: if it is Randy, tell Adam now so the security paperwork starts now for whoever is chosen.

Reasoning

He did the work only he could do - talking Wolfgang into it, and getting the nationality question answered by the person who owns security clearance - and then refused to make the choice that belongs to the engineer manager. The scope reduction is separate and is a cost correction: the original framing carried a body through Oct 5, and once he located the actual mechanism that needs hands on site (someone physically pushing a button in week one) the rest of the window stopped justifying itself. The paperwork deadline is the one thing that is genuinely time-critical, so that is the only thing he made non-negotiable.

Additional Context

Bjorn had floated Jonathan as an alternative and suggested a 10,000 dollar bonus for whoever goes. Wolford originally wanted Wolfgang or Godlove; Godlove is going through a divorce and was unsure about being away from his kid, which took him out. Peter separately told Sarah Almaraz that the boots-on-the-ground question is largely decided and she does not need to act on it.

Observed Evidence

Three direct sources within 90 minutes of each other on 9/17: the C-Suite Sync where he set the scope, the Adam Jackson DM clearing the nationality constraint, and the Wolford DM handing over the choice.

Reasoning Depth Analysis

Org Signal:A CTO will personally go clear a nationality restriction and recruit the volunteer, and then still not take the naming decision off the manager desk.
Who Affected:Wolfgang Resch and Randy, whichever goes; Adam Jackson, who needs lead time on security paperwork; Sarah Almaraz, who books; the Core42 deployment team on site.
Precedent:Reinforces that Peter removes constraints rather than making the call, and that a travel commitment gets scoped to the mechanism that requires presence rather than to the length of the project.
Consequences:Real. The nationality clearance is obtained, the window is now one week rather than through Oct 5, and the security paperwork clock is running on Wolford answer.
Timing:Driven by security-paperwork lead time - the choice had to be named now even though the trip is weeks out.

fathom

I do not actually think we need him there for the entire time of the entire deployment. I think we need him there for the first week or so. That is when we are going to need to push a button.

DM with Adam Jackson

slack

Adam, I would like to Send Wolfgang to the UAE to be our boots on the ground for the first week of the deployment. But he is a German national. Are we able to send him or do I need to find someone else?

💬
DM with Chris Wolford

slack

I am fine with it being Randy. But if you want it to be Randy, you need to tell Adam now, so he can get the security paperwork running now for whoever you choose. I do not mind it being Randy. 100% your call.
