Summary
Window Friday 9/25 afternoon to Thursday 10/1 morning. The gather lost all 13 Peter-recorded Fathom meetings to API rate limiting; all were recovered by hand, and Slack 9/25-9/27 was re-pulled after the gather returned a single page. Eighteen decisions logged, all reviewed one at a time. AI spend: no gates or guardrails, but every person owns knowing their spend and caps; a deliberate overage is backed, an unaware one is not. Desktop v1 ships at minimum scope against a concrete acceptance-test list Nathan is held to, one desktop environment first, and no date commitment until the design plan exists. Endura is welcome as an RLC-H feature, not a standalone product, and stays quiet until engineering has audited it. Open-source stewardship beyond Rocky is a six-month push with Tim Pepper advising, with nothing hidden from him and a seat in the Stratum open-core call sooner than 10/16. Google: near-zero-cost kernel flags go in now but nothing else before commercials; the GDC background-IP clause is written symmetrically; Tissa was told at most three weeks of Vera Rubin validation once a node is available. Smaller calls: Jira stays the system of record, low-confidence dates beat stale ones, the SOC 2 extension was approved on better terms, diffofdiffs goes open source under Apache, and the TPS report falls back to Claude Code.
Wins
The Endura disagreement dissolved in one exchange once it was reframed from product to feature. The SOC 2 renewal kept the same rate while deferring payment about nine months and adding penalty-free cancellation. The GDC term sheet and live-patch quote went out, with Google contacts described as allies. Monthly AI spend is trending down from about 152k toward 120k.
Challenges
Fathom rate limiting wiped out every Peter-recorded meeting in the automated gather. The January desktop target has no design plan behind it yet. Vera Rubin timing still depends on an NVIDIA window that cannot be scheduled, and the three weeks promised to Google is longer than the window Peter expects. One engineer ran a five-figure AI bill without knowing it.
Learnings
Peter guards company focus separately from engineering effort: his objection to Endura was never engineering cost, it was another SKU to sell and track. Pay-first protects real investment, not every keystroke - near-zero-cost enablers sit below the line. He commits to partners on what CIQ controls, a duration after a dependency arrives, rather than a calendar date.
What I Learned About Your Decision-Making
Peter separates company focus from engineering cost: a new SKU is a company-attention cost even when the engineering is identical, so functionality defaults into an existing product. His reflexive no on pre-contract work is the rule; the immediate correction is a cost judgment - anything near-zero cost falls below the pay-first line. On AI spend he backs informed tradeoffs he would disagree with and rejects uninformed ones he might agree with; the variable is awareness, not dollars. When pressure-testing a partner clause, he reads it as the counterpart will, and asks for symmetric language rather than a broader claim. He states a preference and then explicitly declines to mandate it when someone else owns the call. He honors a process gate even on an obvious yes, because skipping it on the easy case weakens it for the hard ones.
Team Status
View TPS ReportAlmost nothing moved since yesterday's report. The one new flag is that Core Distro's Cadence migration to Jenkins (CVE remediation automation) missed its Sep 30 target. It is now a day overdue at 80% confidence, after already slipping once from Sep 25. Performance Intensive Computing is still the problem area: six Fuzzball and Warewulf Pro items are past their dates (v4.3 turn-key AI models by 20 days; AMD evaluation support and multinode NVLink/NCCL by 13; v4.4 image-in-workflow, the Arcee Homebrew CLI, which is Blocked, and RLC Pro images for Warewulf Pro by 6), and the DGX Spark date slipped 33 days with no confidence update. Arcee pre-production remains at 98% in acceptance testing. On the RLC 10.2 front, the LTS GA, the CLK 6.18 kernel and the wk39 kernel CVEs have all converged on Oct 9, with 10.2 FIPS and Pro H compliance due Oct 30. The Core42 575-node GB300 deployment holds at Oct 31, 75%. Worth raising with Chris today: whether the Fuzzball dates are real.
Tomorrow's Focus
Derived, not stated by Peter: sit down with Nathan on desktop scope and a guesstimate date once the Product desktop draft lands; get Tim into the Friday Stratum open-core discussion; scope the Endura engineering audit; update Tissa when NVIDIA confirms a Vera Rubin window.
Decisions Made
Everyone owns their AI spend - no gates or guardrails, but unaware spending is unacceptable
operational · high
Desktop v1 ships at minimum scope - a concrete acceptance-test list to hold Nathan to, one desktop environment first, no date until the design plan exists
strategy · high
Endura goes into RLC-H as a feature, not a standalone product - and no public noise until engineering has audited and stands behind it
strategy · medium
Six-month push for CIQ to be a better steward of its open-source work beyond Rocky - Tim Pepper advises, with full transparency and a seat in the Stratum open-core call
strategy · high
Google live patching - set the near-zero-cost kernel flags now, nothing else before commercials, and treat the Tissa call as listen-not-commit
strategy · medium
GDC term sheet - balance the background-IP clause so it never reads as claiming Google shared code, and approve the live-patch quote as written
strategy · medium
Vera Rubin to Google - commit to a bounded duration (at most 3 weeks after node access), not a date, and invite Google to supply its own hardware
operational · medium
Endorse forward-deployed Fuzzball AI outright; make observability a buy/partner/build discussion after the functionality is written down; ask for a written path to profitability on existing products
strategy · medium
Jira stays the system of record - a shared git context repo is welcome, a centralized program-management engine everyone must use is not
operational · medium
Put dates out even at low confidence so the board shows reality, and leads keep evolving their metrics - dropping the ones that get gamed
operational · medium
Approve the SOC 2 three-year extension on Steve renegotiated terms - same rate, payment deferred, penalty-free cancellation
operational · low
