Hire Hailey Mothershead without reservation, and take John Paul as a qualified yes with a standing instruction not to chase him if he declines
Situation
At the Aug 12 kernel round table Peter gave two very different verdicts. On Hailey he was unreserved - I would hire her today, I thought she was smart, I thought she was inquisitive, I think she will work incredibly well with the team - and said that at a smaller company he would have called Brianne right after the interview and not let her leave the building without papers in front of her. He named his one real concern, a complete lack of C experience, and dismissed it as learnable, and flagged that she will find CIQ feedback culture blunt. On John Paul he deferred entirely to the technical panel, said he did not enjoy the interactions, did not believe JP is interested in what CIQ is doing, agreed with Shreeya read that they are getting roughly a year, and said he would not block a consensus yes. He then added the operative instruction: if we make an offer to him and he does not accept, let us not kill ourselves to make it work out. He closed the meeting with I know this team has felt pressured. I do not want this pressure to bring in the wrong person.
Reasoning
Peter did not weigh the two candidates on the same axis. For Hailey the judgment was fit - a person he can picture working with this team, whose gap is a skill and therefore closeable. For JP the judgment was that the panel owns the technical call and he owns the guard against a pressured org lowering its bar. His deference was explicit and structural: I need to defer to the technical folks on the call when it comes to his chops, and my biggest point of feedback is Sultan feedback. The do-not-chase instruction is the whole decision on JP - it converts a reluctant yes into a bounded one, so that an offer can go out without the org spending negotiating capital defending a hire nobody was excited about.
Additional Context
Nathan named a principal-level band for JP; Sultan raised the concern that a principal-level hire consumes headcount that could go to two more useful people. Four more candidates are in the pipeline for the next round table. Peter had already told Nathan in Slack on Aug 11: Hope I did a good enough sales job. I am a giant Yes on Hailey.
Observed Evidence
Peter on JP: I did not enjoy my interactions with him. Some of it was the rambling, but also just I do not feel like he is really super interested in what we are doing. ... I will not get in the way and block it if the consensus of the org is yes, but I was not super high on him at all. Peter closing: I know this team has felt pressured. I do not want this pressure to bring in the wrong person.

Hope I did a good enough sales job. I am a giant Yes on Hailey, fwiw.
slack
Definitely on Hailey. On JP is there a meh option or a maybe? I do not think so, right? So if I have to pick yes or no, then I guess it is a yes.
