Tell Bjorn the Wallace org is not over-staffed and may still need to grow - and hold the security-engineer ask for a couple of months

Situation

Bjorn asked Peter two deliberately separated questions: is Steve org rightly sized, and is Steve the right person to lead it. On sizing Peter answered that it is rightly sized, meaning it does not need to get smaller - he was ruling out shrinking, not ruling out growth. He brought numbers to the answer: ticket volume, growth in volume, and average life of tickets, which show the team getting swamped. He noted that Karl may help once he is in, spending time on the Mother Brain and Atlas work and also automating some things in that area, but this was named as possible relief rather than as a plan that removes the need for headcount - the org may also need to grow. Peter then flagged that at some point, and by someday he meant the next couple of months, he wants to talk to Bjorn and Greg about a security engineer under Steve again.

Reasoning

Peter answered the question actually asked rather than the one it is easy to hear. Bjorn sizing question invites a yes or no on adequacy; Peter used it to close off the downward direction - this team is not carrying slack - while explicitly leaving the upward direction open. He had the instrumentation in hand (ticket volume, growth, average ticket life) and led with it, which is consistent with treating an unexplained number as missing information before it is bad judgment. Karl was named as a possible source of relief, not as the reason no req is opening now; keeping that open means that if the numbers do not move, coming back for a head is a foreseen outcome rather than a reversal. The security engineer ask is deferred rather than dropped, which keeps it alive without spending Bjorn attention now, when Core42 has it and when Bjorn is about to put a product-suite wish list in front of Peter and ask for a headcount estimate against it - a better container for the ask than an isolated request.

Additional Context

Bjorn asked the sizing and the leadership questions separately and Peter said he was glad they were separate. Bjorn said he was totally open to the security engineer conversation. An existing todo already tracks the security engineer question with Bjorn, Greg and Steve as the people to move it forward.

Observed Evidence

Direct quotes from Peter in the Sep 15 Fathom recording, with the reading of rightly-sized confirmed and corrected by Peter during this reflection: in saying the org was right-sized he was saying it does not need to get smaller, Karl coming in may help, but it also may need to grow.

Reasoning Depth Analysis

Org Signal:A sizing answer from Peter rules out a direction rather than settling the number, and it arrives with ticket instrumentation attached rather than as a judgment call.
Who Affected:Steve Wallace, whose org keeps its current shape with growth still on the table; Karl, whose scope may widen into automation in that area; the security work that stays uncovered while the ask is deferred.
Precedent:Establishes that right-sized is a floor statement in Peter vocabulary - it forecloses shrinking and leaves growth open - and that a headcount ask can be deliberately parked for a better container rather than made in isolation.
Consequences:No req opens now and no team shrinks; the security engineer conversation returns within a couple of months, and the ticket numbers are the thing that will decide whether the org grows.
Timing:Deferred on purpose. Core42 has Bjorn attention now, and Bjorn is about to hand Peter a product-suite wish list with a request for a headcount estimate - the natural place to make the ask.

fathom

I do think it is rightly sized. I have got some numbers right now around tickets and ticket volume. And growth and average life of tickets. We are actually getting swamped. And so some of what I am hoping Karl can do, if I get Karl, or I got Karl, is spend a bunch of time still on the Mother Brain Atlas stuff, but also help automate some things in that world. Otherwise, I was going to be coming to you saying I am actually short a head there.
