Affirm CIQ needs an OSPO and commit engineering time to upstream contribution as the entry ticket to new ecosystems
Situation
After spending time with Tim Pepper during the week, Peter settled a question Max Spevack had repeatedly challenged him on - why CIQ should have an OSPO office at all - and landed on the opposite of the challenge. He concluded that CIQ must have an OSPO, and that engineering has to spend materially more time upstream to be taken seriously in the ecosystems it wants to sell into: if CIQ is going to put out a Kubernetes offering, it had better be committing upstream to Kubernetes and be valued in that community. Tim gave him the magnitude - roughly a quarter of one percent of commits is enough to be seen and recognised as invested. Peter asked Tim to start building a map of where upstream activity buys the most impact and opens the doors CIQ needs, and said he will task engineers against it.
Reasoning
Upstream contribution is not a values position here, it is market permission. A community that does not recognise CIQ will not accept a CIQ offering into its stack, so the contribution is a cost of entry rather than charity. What converted it from an argument into a decision was the magnitude: a quarter of one percent of commits is a number Peter can fund and staff, which moves the question out of philosophy and into planning. He also deliberately went and got the answer from the person who knows the domain rather than deciding from the chair, describing himself as still the new guy with a pile to learn.
Additional Context
Raised in the C-Suite Sync with Bjorn, in the middle of a conversation about offering the RESF half a million dollars a year and about giving Tim Pepper a more structured role. Bjorn independently agreed there is value in a smart person in the chair regardless of measured output. Lands as Bjorn is building an 18-month product plan in which Stratum and Kubernetes are the Series B beachhead.

I came away from it thinking, well, A, CIQ must have an OSPO office. And we need to spend a lot more of our engineering time on the upstream if we are going to be taken seriously. If we are going to be allowed to put out a Kubernetes offering, we better be committing upstream to Kubernetes and be valued in that community. And he is like, and it does not take much, Peter. You need to be a quarter of 1% of the commits. And people will see you and recognize that CIQ is invested in Kubernetes as a thing. So I was like, okay, let us start giving me a map of what we can do to make the most impact and open up the doors that we need to open up by upstream activities, and I will task engineers with it.
