Refuse to build the non-OS Core42 work on top of Ubuntu - getting moving is fine, doing the work entrenches the competitor
Situation
Ahead of the Sep 22 Alex meeting in LA, Bjorn argued for starting the Core42 HLD items that are not gated on the operating system, on the reasoning that the deeper CIQ is embedded the more leverage it has to push Rocky through certification. Peter agreed with the aim and refused the method. He separated getting moving from doing the technical work: most of the boxes on that list get built into and integrated with the OS itself, so building them now would be doing the wiring to embed Ubuntu with Core42 rather than embedding CIQ. He also reclassified the expanded scope as SOW3 rather than SOW2, on the grounds that an extra step - getting Rocky in everywhere - has been inserted ahead of it, and told Bjorn that what he wants out of the Alex meeting is a handshake on the gates to swap Ubuntu for Rocky: certification, an application test-and-certify pass, a swap plan, a timeline and a project plan. He accepted Adam Jackson two-section meeting structure and Bjorn sequencing, agreeing to open on what CIQ can do for Alex, then take ten minutes on the removal gates. In the same exchange, after Bjorn reacted to his absolutes, Peter located the fix in his own framing rather than in the position - leave the black and white statements out, make no statement about can or cannot, just walk through the gate.
Reasoning
The asset Peter is protecting is the OS position, and he judges that every non-OS integration built on Ubuntu is a sunk cost that makes Ubuntu harder to remove later - so Bjorn leverage argument is right in direction and inverted in effect. He checked the magnitude before the mechanism: Bjorn hypothetical split was five OS-specific items and five not, and Peter read the actual list as so many of these being OS-level that the non-OS set is too small to buy the leverage being paid for. He conceded the conversational sequencing without conceding the engineering, because the meeting can open wherever Bjorn wants as long as CIQ does not start building. And he stripped his own absolutes out of the customer-facing version because a cannot invites a counter-argument while asking what the gates are invites a plan.
Additional Context
Ubuntu is already deployed everywhere at Core42 after Rocky was pulled from the original SOW. Alex, the CISO, is now favourable to CIQ and is one of two decision makers alongside Richard Hickey, who replaces the departing Erik. Bjorn undertook to talk to Michael Shinn the same day and get a lay of the land on the SOW draft Shinn had reportedly started.
Observed Evidence
Direct extended quotes from Peter across a five-minute exchange with Bjorn. He names the mechanism (these boxes get baked into the OS), the inversion (this embeds Ubuntu, not CIQ), the reclassification (that is SOW3 at this point, we had an extra step added), the ask for the Alex meeting (a handshake on the gates, a plan to swap the OSs, applications tested and certified, an agreed timeline and project plan), and the framing correction on his own absolutes.

So, yes, there is an argument for getting moving, but there is not an argument for actually doing the work technically. Most of these get built and baked into and integrated with the OS itself. We do not want to be building these things on top of Ubuntu. That is not embedding us more with Core42. That will actually be doing the wiring to embed Ubuntu with Core42.

I think where you had an allergic reaction, Bjorn, is around my statement of, you know, whatever, we cannot do it with Ubuntu. Leave the absolute black and white statements out of it. The cannots, okay? And I would just say to him, what are the gates to us working with you to get Rocky in place of Ubuntu? And we do not make any statement about can or cannot. We are just trying to walk through the gate.
