Pre-empt a three-week delivery commitment to Core42 before the deal closes - hand Bjorn the real sequencing mid-call so the number dies before it is said

Situation

During the Aug 19 Core42 gap-analysis call, with the customer having just widened the scope, Peter went to Bjorn privately in DM to stop the three-week delivery figure from being repeated to Core42. He gave the decomposition rather than an instruction: setting all of this up will take dramatically longer than the 3 weeks we have been talking about. Lots of this cannot even start till we have done the 3 weeks we were planning of getting OSs set up and networked, etc. Then it is setting up identity managment, that could take two weeks on its own (likely one). And then other monitoring etc on top of that. He then named the intent outright - I want it to be a problem for after the deal closes... I am trying to pre-empt a Bjorn special we will have this all done in 3 wks comment made before the deal closes. Bjorn produced the correctly caveated version unprompted: To be clear, I will say that provided there are no external dependencies, that we could deliver original SOW is 3-4 weeks. The new scope is larger. Peter: super comfortable.

Reasoning

Peter separated two things Bjorn was collapsing - what CIQ can commit to on the ORIGINAL SOW versus what the newly expanded scope would take. The three-week figure was true of the first and wildly false of the second, and Core42 had moved the goalposts in that same meeting, so an accurate old number was about to become an inaccurate new promise. Rather than telling Bjorn to stop talking, Peter handed him the sequencing so he could hold the line himself, which is why a one-line acknowledgement was the entire response once Bjorn self-corrected. The load-bearing constraint is timing: Peter is not disputing that CIQ will owe Core42 a timeline, he is refusing to let it be negotiated while there is no signature. This is the same protect-the-close move as the SOW fork, applied to spoken commitments instead of to paper.

Additional Context

Peter was not doubting delivery capacity in the same thread - he wrote that Bjorn is gonna love Alex, that this is validation for his work and his team, and that he has already hired one of his engineers. We are ready to run. The objection is to the arithmetic and its timing, not to the team. The correction was delivered with an affectionate label, a Bjorn special, framing it as a known and forgivable habit rather than an accusation.

Observed Evidence

Direct quotes from the live DM thread, timestamped mid-call. The outcome is visible in the same thread - Bjorn restated the number with the original-SOW caveat attached and Peter accepted it in three words. Confirmed by Peter in reflection review with no correction.

Reasoning Depth Analysis

Org Signal:Delivered privately and affectionately rather than in the shared channel, so it reads to Bjorn as a nudge from a peer who expects the habit rather than a rebuke on the record.
Who Affected:Whoever inherits delivery - Nathan Blackhams org and Chris Wolfords team - since they would own any number Bjorn stated to the customer. Also Adam Jackson, who is managing the commercials against the same close.
Precedent:Establishes that pre-close, delivery timelines are the CTOs number to release rather than the CROs, and that the correction takes the form of handing over the arithmetic rather than issuing a gag.
Consequences:Real. A stated three weeks against the expanded scope would have become a missed commitment inside the first month of the largest deal in front of the company, on an engagement whose GB300 piece already carries a hard two-month deadline.
Timing:Mid-call, before the number could be said - the only moment the intervention works. Waiting for the debrief would have meant walking a stated figure back with the customer already holding it.

Bjorn: To be clear, I will say that provided there are no external dependencies, that we could deliver original SOW is 3-4 weeks. The new scope is larger. / Peter: super comfortable

Outcome

Held. SOW closed at five weeks; when Core42 pushed to compress on Aug 31 the three-week figure was never on the table and the customer call carried no date.
